Tanzania has more to offer than one safari route. You can spend days watching wildlife in the northern parks, travel to quieter southern or western landscapes, walk in the highlands or slow down on the Indian Ocean coast. The right combination depends on travel time as much as the places on your wish list.

Explore the destination guides, then browse the complete list of destinations below to find what interests you. We can put the parks, mountains, islands and cultural visits into a workable itinerary with realistic transfers, suitable accommodation and a clear current quotation for your dates.

Tanzania The northern safari circuit

Northern Tanzania is a good starting point when you want several distinct wildlife landscapes in one journey. Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti can be connected by road, but the drive between locations is part of the day. A well planned itinerary leaves room for wildlife viewing rather than collecting park names at the expense of time on safari.

Tarangire often makes a practical opening stop. From there, you may continue through the highlands toward Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Choose the number of nights in each area before choosing a hotel: a comfortable lodge in the wrong location can add unnecessary driving each morning and evening.

The Great Migration moves according to grazing and rainfall. If witnessing a particular stage is central to your trip, tell us your travel month so we can discuss a suitable Serengeti region. River crossings and animal sightings remain unpredictable.

Serengeti or Ngorongoro: choose your time well

Tanzania Serengeti or Ngorongoro: choose your time well

The Serengeti rewards time. One night can give a glimpse of the park, but additional nights allow game drives at different times and reduce the pressure of long transfers. The central region can be a practical base for a first visit, while other areas may suit a seasonal wildlife interest.

Ngorongoro Crater is usually experienced as a guided descent and game drive within a single day. The surrounding highlands and accommodation options shape the schedule, so it is worth checking where you sleep before and after your crater visit. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a distinct destination with its own entry arrangements.

For a shorter safari, it can be better to spend time in fewer places. We can explain the road hours, park hours and cost of domestic flights before you decide whether to combine both destinations.

Tanzania Explore Tanzania’s southern safari parks

Southern Tanzania can suit travelers who want a quieter style of safari or who are starting from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. Nyerere and Ruaha require planning around air connections, accommodation and the number of nights available. Mikumi may work for a different journey where road access is the priority.

A destination sometimes sold under the name Selous may in fact be a trip to Nyerere National Park. Ask for the exact park or reserve in your itinerary and check which activities are permitted at your chosen camp. Any boat excursion, game drive or guided walk should be explicitly listed in the quotation.

Udzungwa Mountains add a different experience based on forest walking. It is most rewarding when you allow time for a trail and guide, rather than treating it as another vehicle based game drive.

Go further west for forest and wilderness

Tanzania Go further west for forest and wilderness

Katavi, Mahale and Gombe lie far from the most commonly traveled safari circuit. They may appeal to returning visitors or anyone with the time and budget for a more remote itinerary. Travel can involve scheduled or charter flights, road connections and boat journeys; these details should be solved before settling the number of nights.

Gombe and Mahale are especially associated with guided chimpanzee trekking. Trekking conditions, group arrangements and viewing opportunities depend on local rules and the behavior of wild animals. A chimpanzee encounter cannot be promised, even on a carefully organized trip.

Lake Tanganyika adds an impressive lakeside setting to a western journey. The value of combining lake time with park visits depends on the location of your camp and the actual journey between stops.

Tanzania Climb Kilimanjaro and explore the highlands

Mount Kilimanjaro is a multi day guided expedition. Routes differ in their approach, length, camping or hut accommodation and time for altitude adjustment. Choosing an extra acclimatization day can be more useful than rushing to the shortest available route. Discuss fitness, previous altitude experience and mountain support before deciding.

Mount Meru provides another substantial climb near Arusha. The Usambara Mountains offer a different style of walking among highland scenery and villages, while Ol Doinyo Lengai is a demanding volcano outing that needs an experienced local team and a suitable conditions check.

If you plan to climb and then go on safari, allow time for recovery and ground transfers. We can place the mountain and safari portions in a realistic order based on your arrival and departure points.

Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia and the coast

Tanzania Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia and the coast

Zanzibar can be a beach finish after a safari, or the start of a longer Tanzania holiday. Stone Town, coastal hotels and optional island excursions offer different experiences; your hotel location affects both swimming conditions and transfer time. Ask about the tide at the beach you are considering if ocean swimming is a priority.

Pemba and Mafia are different island journeys with their own flight connections and accommodation choices. They may appeal to travelers looking for quieter coastal stays or marine experiences. Diving, snorkeling and other sea activities always depend on the operator, weather and water conditions.

For a mainland coast option, Pangani can be considered where the road route makes sense. If you need an overnight connection through Dar es Salaam, its airport and city transfer times should be built into the schedule.

Tanzania Add cultural and local experiences

A cultural stop should have a clear host arrangement, guide and purpose. Around Lake Eyasi, travelers may ask about visits connected with Hadzabe or Datoga communities. The activity and any contribution to hosts should be agreed in advance rather than presented as a guaranteed performance.

A Maasai community visit can be paired with some northern circuit itineraries when there is enough time for travel and a responsible local arrangement. Near Moshi, Materuni, Lake Chala and Chemka Hot Springs offer choices for a free day around Kilimanjaro.

Tell us whether you prefer a walk, local food, a coffee visit or a calm scenic outing. We will give you the driving time, activity length and any entrance or guiding charges in the proposal.

How to choose a sensible Tanzania itinerary

Tanzania How to choose a sensible Tanzania itinerary

Start with the experience you would regret missing. For a first safari, that might be Serengeti wildlife, an Ngorongoro Crater visit or several days in the parks. For another traveler, a Kilimanjaro climb or uninterrupted Zanzibar beach time may be the center of the trip. Place the remaining destinations around that priority.

Distance matters. Moving between the northern safari circuit, the far west and the islands is rarely sensible in a very short trip. Domestic flights can save road time, but they still require airport transfers, baggage planning and suitable connections. A route with fewer destinations often gives you more genuine time at each one.

Give us your travel dates, group size, hotel standard, arrival and departure airports, and the places that matter most. We can then propose a day by day route, with clear driving hours, flights, accommodation, activities and a written quotation.

Discover Tanzania

Northern safari circuit

Travel between northern Tanzania’s parks for wildlife, crater landscapes and varied safari stays. The best route depends on your number of days and preferred pace.

Wildlife & migration

Serengeti National Park

Vast grasslands, predators and seasonal wildebeest movement make the Serengeti a cornerstone of many Tanzania safaris. Choose the region of the park according to your dates and travel time. A longer stay lets you compare sunrise and afternoon game drives without changing camp every night. Ask which area and airstrip best match your season.

Crater safari

Ngorongoro Crater

Descend into the crater for a day of wildlife viewing, then allow time for the highland scenery and the drive to your next stop. Crater entry requires a carefully timed itinerary. A crater visit normally involves a full day once descent, ascent and transfers are counted. Ask where the overnight stop falls in relation to the crater entrance.

Elephants & baobabs

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire’s river landscape, baobabs and wildlife offer a strong addition to a northern circuit journey. It pairs well with nearby parks when road times are planned properly. Lodge location changes your entry and exit times. Consider whether a single night is enough or whether a slower two night stay better fits your wider itinerary.

Lake & forest

Lake Manyara National Park

Explore the change from groundwater forest to lakeside habitats on a game drive. Its position can make it a practical stop on the way toward Ngorongoro. The park works well in some northbound road itineraries. Check the transfer time from your previous overnight stop before deciding how much of the day is available for the drive.

Short safari

Arusha National Park

A useful nature stop near Arusha with varied scenery. Ask about the park activities permitted for your visit and allow enough time for transport. It can fit near an arrival or departure day if your flights allow. Guided walks and other activities must be confirmed with the relevant provider and park rules.

Quiet northern park

Mkomazi National Park

Consider Mkomazi when you want a less common northern Tanzania itinerary. The route is most suitable when its travel time fits your wider journey. This park lies outside the usual Serengeti circuit. A visit works best with a clear road plan and accommodation booked with the distance in mind.

Remote landscapes

Lake Natron

A striking Rift Valley landscape that suits travelers comfortable with a longer, rougher road journey. Conditions and access vary by season; we will advise on logistics. The road journey can be demanding, and the landscape is more of a remote exploration than a conventional game drive. Ask about current conditions and suitable transport.

Discover Tanzania

Southern safari circuit

Explore larger stretches of southern Tanzania at a slower pace. Flights and long road transfers need to be matched carefully to the days available.

Southern wildlife

Nyerere National Park

Known to many travelers through the name Selous, Nyerere is a national park with its own access arrangements. Check the exact protected area and activities on your itinerary. For a Zanzibar departure, consider both a same day flight option and an overnight visit. Your written quote should identify the exact park and any optional activity.

Remote safari

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha rewards travelers who want more time in a remote wildlife setting. Flights, camp location and the number of nights shape a workable visit. Several nights can justify the journey and give your guide more opportunities to explore. Check seasonal flight services and camp availability well before travel.

Accessible safari

Mikumi National Park

Mikumi can work as a shorter safari from the Dar es Salaam region or as part of a wider southern route, depending on travel plans. The distance from your departure point is key to whether this is a day visit or an overnight safari. Ask for actual drive time rather than a simple park list.

Forest & hiking

Udzungwa Mountains

Choose Udzungwa for forest landscapes and guided walking rather than a conventional vehicle safari. Trail choice and conditions should be confirmed before travel. A guided forest walk has different requirements from a safari drive. Tell us your walking ability so we can discuss a suitable trail and the time it needs.

Discover Tanzania

Western Tanzania

Western Tanzania takes more travel planning and usually suits longer journeys. Flights, seasonal accommodation and park access should be checked early.

Chimpanzee trekking

Gombe National Park

Plan a guided forest visit on Lake Tanganyika’s shore, with boat connections and trekking arrangements confirmed in advance. Chimpanzee sightings are not guaranteed. Lake Tanganyika access and park arrangements must be coordinated. Allow flexibility in your schedule for trekking conditions and local transport.

Forest & lake

Mahale Mountains National Park

Combine remote forest trekking with time beside Lake Tanganyika. Access and lodging options need to be lined up with the available travel schedule. This destination can involve several travel legs. Give it enough nights to experience the setting as well as any planned forest trekking.

Remote wilderness

Katavi National Park

Katavi suits travelers looking for a less visited park and enough time to justify the journey. Ask us to confirm flights and available camps for your dates. Remote transport can make a very short trip impractical. A multi night stay may be a better fit when you account for flights and camp transfers.

Lakeside journey

Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika can complement a western Tanzania itinerary, especially when visiting Gombe or Mahale. Transfer times vary widely by route. Lake time can add a restful part to a west Tanzania trip, but getting between lakeside locations can take longer than expected. Check the precise transfer method.

Discover Tanzania

Mountains and highlands

Explore Tanzania on foot, from a guided summit expedition to day walks. Choose the route and duration to suit your fitness, preparation and available time.

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
Mountain trekking

Mount Kilimanjaro

Africa’s highest mountain has several established trekking routes. Compare mountain days, acclimatization time, camping or hut arrangements and the support included in your package. A good route decision considers acclimatization, your preferred number of mountain days, guide and porter support, and whether the itinerary uses camps or huts.

Highland trek

Mount Meru

A guided climb in the Arusha area that may suit an independent mountain trip or time before Kilimanjaro. Discuss the route, park requirements and overnight plan. Ask about park guiding arrangements, the walking stages and descent day. A Meru climb also needs its own preparation and should not be treated as a casual day hike.

Village & hiking trails

Usambara Mountains

The Usambaras offer cooler highland walks, viewpoints and village based travel. Match your hiking days to the transport needed to reach the area. Route options differ in distance and overnight arrangements. Combine walks with enough time to enjoy the highlands rather than spending most of the visit in a vehicle.

Challenging volcano trek

Ol Doinyo Lengai

An adventurous volcano excursion that requires careful local planning. Trail conditions and guide arrangements should be reviewed for your travel dates. This is a demanding trek that requires current advice about conditions and safety. Discuss the departure time, guide, equipment and fitness requirements beforehand.

Discover Tanzania

Islands and coast

Add relaxed beach days, historic streets or marine activities after a safari or climb. Sea conditions and island transfer schedules affect the plan.

Zanzibar in Tanzania
Beaches & Stone Town

Zanzibar

Explore Stone Town, choose a beach area to match your swimming and hotel preferences, and add island activities only where they fit your schedule. Stone Town and the beaches deserve different amounts of time. You can split your stay or use a beach hotel as a base, depending on how often you want to change hotels.

Island retreat

Pemba Island

Pemba can suit a quieter island holiday. Check flight or boat connections, resort location and the excursions available at your chosen base. Check where you land and how far your hotel is from the airport. Plan water activities with the property or a licensed operator for the conditions on your dates.

Marine escape

Mafia Island

Consider Mafia for an island stay focused on coastal nature and marine activities. Wildlife encounters at sea depend on season and conditions. A longer stay can give you more flexibility for sea conditions. Confirm any marine excursion, equipment and fees separately before including it in your holiday budget.

Mainland beach

Pangani Coast

Combine a mainland coastal stay with a northern or southern journey when road travel makes sense. Confirm accommodation and beach conditions for your dates. Road access and your onward destination determine whether Pangani fits. Ask about the actual beach area and lodging location when comparing options.

City & connections

Dar es Salaam

Tanzania’s coastal city serves as a travel hub and can be a practical overnight stop. Allow time for airport, port and city transfers. Build in adequate time between a city hotel, domestic airport, international terminal or ferry. A practical stopover can make the rest of the trip less rushed.

Discover Tanzania

Culture and local experiences

Add cultural experiences with a local guide, realistic transfer times and respectful arrangements with host communities.

Cultural visit

Lake Eyasi

Plan a guided visit around Lake Eyasi with clear expectations about the communities, activities and travel time. Experiences depend on arrangements agreed locally. A local guide can explain the area and the agreed visit. Confirm the host arrangement, departure time and drive from your overnight lodge.

Community visit

Maasai communities

Ask about a community visit that fits your safari route. Your itinerary should specify the location, host arrangement and any fees. Each community visit is different. Ask who hosts, what the fee covers and how long you will spend there so the visit fits respectfully into your day.

Waterfall & coffee

Materuni Village

Near Kilimanjaro, Materuni can work as a day activity with a guided walk and a locally arranged coffee experience, subject to your chosen program. A waterfall walk and coffee activity can be planned separately or together. Footwear, weather and the climb on the trail should be considered.

Crater lake outing

Lake Chala

A scenic crater lake outing near the Kenya border. Ask about the activities available and account for the drive from your base. Tell us whether you want a viewpoint stop or a longer lakeside visit. Activities and access should be checked before setting off from Moshi.

Day trip

Chemka Hot Springs

A warm water day trip that can fit a free day around Moshi or Arusha. Confirm access, transport and current visitor arrangements. This is an easy addition to some Moshi itineraries when there is enough travel time. Confirm current opening arrangements and whether a guide is included.
