Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Packages – 5 & 6 Day Climbs

The Marangu Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. It starts at Marangu Gate, climbs through rainforest to Mandara Hut and continues via Horombo and Kibo Huts towards the summit. Unlike Kilimanjaro’s camping routes, Marangu has designated mountain huts for overnight stays. Our 5 and 6 day Marangu packages offer different amounts of time on the mountain.

The 5 day climb follows a direct schedule, with less time to adjust to altitude. The 6 day climb usually includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut before continuing to Kibo. Compare each package’s daily walking plan, hut accommodation, inclusions and price before deciding which schedule suits you.

The Marangu Route begins at Marangu Gate on Kilimanjaro’s southeastern slopes. The trail climbs through forest and moorland to Horombo Hut, then crosses the more exposed alpine landscape towards Kibo Hut. From there, climbers leave at night for the summit attempt.

Our 5 and 6 day Marangu Route packages follow the same main trail with a different amount of time for acclimatization. Marangu is the Kilimanjaro route with overnight hut accommodation. Check the daily itinerary and included services before booking.

Find Your Trekking Pace 5 or 6 Days on Marangu

The 5 day Marangu climb is the shorter choice. It moves from Mandara to Horombo and Kibo with a relatively quick gain in altitude. The summit night and descent are physically demanding, so consider your experience and preparation carefully.

The 6 day Marangu climb usually adds a day at Horombo Hut for an acclimatization walk and rest before ascending to Kibo. The extra day gives you more time at altitude but does not guarantee that you will avoid altitude sickness or reach the summit.

Facts About Climbing The Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

The Marangu Route is an out-and-back Kilimanjaro trail: climbers ascend and descend along the same general route. Overnight stops are normally at Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut according to the selected itinerary. Sleeping facilities are shared and simpler than a hotel.

The main difference between the 5 and 6 day climbs is the additional day commonly spent at Horombo on the 6 day schedule. Both itineraries involve a long, cold summit night and a substantial descent afterwards. Read the exact camp and walking plan before booking.
