Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, you will be met by a representative from Tanzania Adventures Group and transferred to your lodge in Arusha. This first day is designed for rest, safari briefing, and preparation for the adventure ahead. Depending on your arrival time, you may relax at the lodge and enjoy the gardens, pool, or views of Mount Meru.
Your driver-guide will review the program, explain safari timing, road distances, packing advice, and what to expect during the calving season in Ndutu. An early rest is recommended so that you can begin the journey fresh the following morning.
Suggested stay: Arusha Planet Lodge / Forest Hill Hotel / Mount Meru Hotel
Day 2: Arusha to Ndutu via Ngorongoro Conservation Area
After breakfast, depart Arusha with picnic lunch boxes and begin the drive toward the southern Serengeti ecosystem. The route passes through the Ngorongoro highlands and opens into the Ndutu area, known for its expansive grass plains and concentration of wildebeest during the calving months. The drive itself is scenic and introduces you to changing landscapes from cultivated areas to wildlife-rich plains.
Upon entering the Ndutu region, your first game drive begins immediately. You may already encounter herds of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, jackals, hyenas, and big cats searching for opportunities around the newborn calves. Arrive at camp in the evening for dinner and overnight in the bush atmosphere of this special migration zone.
Suggested stay: Ndutu Heritage Camp / Lake Masek Tented Lodge / Ang’ata Ndutu Camp
Day 3: Full Day Game Drive in Ndutu Calving Area
Spend the full day exploring Ndutu with morning and afternoon game drives. This area is especially productive during calving season because the nutrient-rich short-grass plains attract large concentrations of wildebeest preparing to give birth or moving with very young calves. The wildlife experience here is dynamic, with excellent chances to see lions resting near the herds, hyenas patrolling the plains, and cheetahs scanning for movement.
Birdlife is also impressive in the wet season, and the scenery is beautiful with fresh green grass, seasonal lakes, and dramatic skies. Your guide will adjust the driving plan according to recent wildlife movements, maximizing your chances of getting meaningful sightings rather than simply following a fixed route.
Suggested stay: Ndutu Heritage Camp / Lake Masek Tented Lodge / Ang’ata Ndutu Camp
Day 4: Another Full Day in Ndutu for Migration and Predator Viewing
A second full day in Ndutu makes this safari much stronger because it gives you more time to follow the movement of the herds and focus on wildlife behavior. Calving season is not only about numbers; it is also about timing, patience, and understanding where predator action may happen. With a full additional day, you have better chances to experience the ecosystem when it is most active.
You may choose a very early start for sunrise game viewing, when cats are often still active, followed by a picnic lunch in the bush and more exploration across the plains, woodland edges, and lake areas. This extra safari day is one of the most valuable parts of the overall program because it turns the trip from a simple transfer itinerary into a deeper wildlife experience.
Suggested stay: Ndutu Heritage Camp / Lake Masek Tented Lodge / Ang’ata Ndutu Camp
Day 5: Ndutu to Karatu / Ngorongoro Rim
After breakfast and a final morning game drive in the Ndutu area, continue with wildlife viewing as you exit toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This day offers a smoother transition from the southern plains to the cooler highlands. Depending on timing and lodge location, you may arrive in Karatu or on the Ngorongoro rim area in time to relax and enjoy the scenery before the crater safari the next morning.
Overnight near Ngorongoro is ideal because it places you in good position for an early descent into the crater. The change in altitude and scenery is dramatic, giving the itinerary a strong contrast between the open migration plains and the forested crater rim landscape.
Suggested stay: Farm of Dreams Lodge / Marera Valley Lodge / Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha
Today you descend early into the Ngorongoro Crater for one of the best wildlife viewing experiences in Africa. The crater floor supports an impressive concentration of animals including buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, warthogs, hippos, hyenas, lions, and an excellent chance to see black rhino with some luck. Because water and grazing are available year-round, wildlife is often visible within relatively short driving distances.
After a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, continue the crater game drive before ascending to the rim and driving back to Arusha. On arrival, transfer to the airport or hotel depending on your onward plans. This marks the end of your 6 Days Ndutu Calving Season and Ngorongoro Safari.
End of safari: Transfer to Arusha hotel or airport
