The Machame route, also known as the Whisky Route is one of the most scenic and recommended routes on Kilimanjaro. This popular route with paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Ice fields to join the Barafu Route to the summit. Because it can be done over longer periods and the incline is more manageable it has a much higher success rate of summit.
Begin your Kilimanjaro adventure with a drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate. After registering at the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority offices, commence the climb through the rainforest to Machame Camp, located at 9,900 ft / 3,000 m. A side trip to Maundi Crater is a good way to see the surroundings including Northern Tanzania.
After breakfast, start trekking to Shira Camp. Stop for a short break and snacks at Kibo Hut before continuing to Shira Camp. Reach Shira Camp in the afternoon and enjoy your last night on the mountain.
After a long sleep, wake up for breakfast and pack. Continue your descent through the moorland to Mandara Huts. Here, you will have lunch then proceed your triumphant recessional down through the lush forest to Marangu Park gate. After the gate, sign out, and a vehicle will take you back to the hotel where it is time for your certificate presentation and celebration!
Ascend to Karanga Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. Rest and prepare for the big day ahead.
